Old Redwood roots are my medium of choice. Their origin, shape and long lived journey inspire me in my work. These smaller parts of a larger root system were broken apart by land clearing, logging and winter river flooding, producing large piles of roots. Access to this source of material has been greatly diminished, but is still available in limited quantities on private land. When old trees were cut down, the roots produced new trees that grew where the old one once was. Roots can be thousands of years old.
